Best driving roads in Slovenia
Slovenia is small, but its roads keep drivers coming back. Here are seven routes you can enjoy in a day from Lake Bled.
1. Vršič Pass
50 numbered hairpins between Kranjska Gora and Trenta at 1,611 m. The classic you cannot skip.
2. Mangart Road
Slovenia's highest road, climbing above 2,000 m beneath Mount Mangart. Narrow, with tight bends and tunnels, and an unmatched view. The road is open seasonally – check conditions before you go.
3. Soča Valley: Bovec – Kobarid – Tolmin
Flowing bends along the emerald river, with stops at the Soča gorges and the Kozjak waterfall. The perfect follow-up to Vršič.
4. Pokljuka
A forested plateau above Bled with quiet, winding roads and alpine pastures. A great short drive early in the morning.
5. Lake Bohinj
Just half an hour from Bled. Drive along the lake to Ukanc and the Savica waterfall and finish with coffee by the water.
6. Solčava Panoramic Road
A panoramic road above the Logar Valley with views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. A longer trip from Bled but worth a full day.
7. From the Alps to the sea
Through the Vipava Valley and the Karst to Piran in about two hours. Mountains in the morning, Adriatic sunset at night.
